LIFESTYLE & LEISURE

San Bernardino:
The Summer Capital

Paraguay's premier holiday retreat, where historic charm meets lakeside luxury.

Known affectionately as "San Ber," this historic town transforms every summer (December to February) into the pulsing heart of Paraguayan social life. Founded by German and Swiss immigrants in 1881, it sits on the shores of Lake Ypacaraí, offering a unique blend of European heritage and tropical leisure.

For residents of Asunción, San Bernardino is the ultimate escape. It is where the city moves to cool down, relax, and enjoy the slower pace of lakeside living.

Boat Rides & Sunsets

One of the classic San Ber experiences is taking a boat ride out onto the lake. For around 30,000 PYG (approx. $4 USD), you can enjoy a 15-minute tour offering stunning views of the coastline and the distant hills.

Local Insight: While the lake is beautiful to look at and boat upon, swimming is generally discouraged due to fluctuating water quality levels. Stick to the pool for swimming and the lake for boating and sunsets using the public pier.

High Season (Dec - Feb)

The town is fully alive. Bars, clubs, and restaurants are open daily. The atmosphere is vibrant, crowded, and energetic. Expect higher prices for accommodation.

Rest of the Year

A peaceful, almost sleepy retreat. Perfect for quiet reflection, romantic getaways, and enjoying nature without the crowds. Note that some seasonal businesses may close during the week.

Getting There

San Bernardino is about 45-60 minutes from Asunción by car. We recommend renting a vehicle or hiring a private driver for safety and convenience, especially at night. Public buses are available (Lomo Grande line) costing approx. 7,000 PYG, but are less comfortable for tourists.
